Standard and Immediate

Hey, look kids. Two posts in one week. I can feel the waves of accomplishment roll over me.

I’m a simple and deluded creature.

So some of my purely 4e peeps have gnashed their teeth a bit at my reflection on what 4e did wrong. It stings as it does for children watching a divorce—the shock of watching love and devotion being transformed into reflection and regret. But there is still love there, I promise you folks. We still talk. We still play. She still whispers sweet nothings into my ear. Reflection and regret, though, those are powerful tools. Pain brings sharp lessons. The Bus

A friend of mine asked me, with deadly seriousness, why I was throwing 4e under the bus? I was caught off guard, flat-footed as it were. What a fucker! How dare he?

You know as well as I do that RPGs, in a cosmic and historical sense, are insignificant. But I’m the hero of my own damn story, and they are my little chunk of insignificance. I’m the kind of guy who likes to look back and meditate failure like a Flagellant. It’s how I push forward, amid the tides of sins. I don’t believe that numerology can lead to success; like it’s a good game because it is old but new, and we have the stars to back us up. The ways of marketing are strange, and obscure. It’s the new secret society, hiding its mysteries with vagaries. I’ve never quite been able to wrap my head around it.

But to be honest, the timing is not the important part. It’s the process for development. Usually the process for an edition ramp up is a very secret affair. As for goals, there are always at least two—make it bigger than ever and make it fun.   Continue reading ‘Essential’ »
